THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking to for a Vice President of Engineering to join our organization and provide strategic leadership, aligning our 4 teams (Hardware, Software, Chemistry and Applications) in taking customer-validated products to market. The Vice President of Engineering will have a strong background in hardware and software with heavy product and project management experience. The Vice President of Engineering will focus on delivering 2 custom printers in the next 18 months that target 2 specific applications. This person will report to and work closely with the CPO/CTO.

Specifically, this person will:

• Lead the development of 2 custom printers, delivering customer-validate products, within an 18-month timeline for execution.
• Provide direction and leadership to all 4 teams at Azul 3D, maintaining elite standards for hardware, software, materials, and applications as designs are brought to market.
• Develop and lead large-scale solutions through viable project management cycles.
• Guide and mentor teams in large-scale technological challenges that may present throughout the development of custom hardware, custom software, and next generation materials with uniquely designed geometries for market.
• Contribute to vision and direction of system platform solutions to disrupt billion-dollar industries.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR IN YOU

• Proven record of leading teams in the development of complex system platforms with a heavy focus in hardware and software integration.
• Thermoset-based 3D printing experience strong preferred.
• Degree in engineering, physics, or chemistry with experience in engineering/project management.
• Track record of delivering solutions with exceptional project-management skills.
• Background in product development with experience taking a product through all phases of development, from conception to commercial launch.
• 5+ years of management experience: leading, mentoring, and motivating teams.
• Thrive on working with very smart people from different disciplines and know how to motivate them, especially when the going gets tough.
• Are a problem-solver and trouble-shooter. When something does not work, you do what it takes to figure it out. The phrase “I don’t know” is always followed by “but I’m going to figure it out.”
• Are creative. You think about things through multiple lenses so that you come up with great solutions to complex problems. You do not default to the tried and true unless it makes sense to do so.
• Are a strong collaborator. You can work solo, but you enjoy sharing the lane with others.
• Take initiative. You do not wait for someone to tell you what to do. You see a need and you take it on.
  Are not fazed by a fast-paced and, sometimes, even chaotic environment. We are ambitious with our timelines and milestones, and often take risks to make larger leaps forward in progress.
• Have a deep sense of integrity. You believe in doing things well, not cutting corners, and treating people with respect.

HERE IS HOW WE ANTICIPATE YOUR FIRST SIX MONTHS LOOKING

Within one month, you will:

• Dive deep into the product to fully understand the system.
• Develop an understanding of the framework and architecture for printer hardware and software.
• Get to know the cross-functional team, including each person’s focus area and skill set (spanning the hardware, software, materials, and application teams)

Within three months, you will:

• Develop detailed timelines for the 2 custom printers, integrating next generation materials and specifically designed applications.
• Coach and mentor team members, based on their learning needs and areas of development.
• Participate in hiring as we continue to build our team.

Within six months, you will:

• Deliver first prototype version of new printer platforms.
• Develop a detailed plan for commercial launch with major feasibility milestones.
• Participate in defining an overall company roadmap for technology strategy.
• Opportunity to contribute to the venture capital ecosystem.
• Continue to motivate and guide the team.
• Serve as a key member of leadership.
